What's in a name?

A friend suggested that I try creating and writing a blog.  A blog being short passages rather than lengthy novels.  A blog being what I might want to say in the moment.  A blog being less work with the possibility of more immediate satisfaction and/or success.  So, here is my first entry to BeeJays Blog.  Enjoy!  Any response will be welcome.

What's in a name? You have no doubt heard that sentiment before. Well, you'd be surprised. I know I was when I looked up all the possible meanings for my name – Bob. You might think of “bobbing” for apples if you were soon to be attending a Hallowe'en party. You might think of a particular style of haircut if you were a hairdresser. You might even think of a float for a fishing line if you were a fisherman. But there are so many more.

Over the water in jolly old England, bob is an informal term for a British shilling. Has been since 1789. It is also a more endearing term for members of the police force. In the equine world, bob is an abbreviation for 'Best of Breed' and also refers to a docked horse's tail. Bob also refers to the movement made when one curtsies or bows or the weight at the end of a plumb line or one of the two runners on a bobsled. The on-line dictionary also tells me that bob means to strike lightly or it can refer to a short, jerky motion. Who knew? How often do you use my name in day to day conversation? Now – what does your name mean?
